Three artists in Australia team up with a scent marketer to create a fragrance based on the smell of a brand-new Apple product. Is the smell that distinctive?
Would you like to smell like your MacBook Pro?
No, not now that you’ve taken it to all the corners of your living space and the rear seats in coach on American Airlines. But the original, virginal, just-unboxed smell that apparently some find tantalizingly distinctive.
I have great news for you. For three Australian designers, collectively knows as Greatest Hits, decided that the world needed a fragrance that smells like Apple products. So, as 9to5 Mac sniffs it, they went to a “scent solutions company” called Air Aroma and put their noses to the grindstone.
This all smells of hoary hogwash to me. But might I quote Air Aroma’s heartfelt homily for a moment: “The scent created for Greatest Hits encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and of course the aluminum laptop which has come straight from the factory where it was assembled in China.”
I have bought a few Apple products over the years and I am very fond of sniffing people and things. However, I will need more than a few commenters to describe their own sense of what this bouquet truly is, the mere thought doesn’t fill my nostrils with anything definitive.
Does it have an underlying hint of rosebud and cherry? Does the faintest molecule of nutmeg and anchovy waft from the packaging? Or are these people trying to make you believe that it’s seductive to smell like a brand-new computer?
Apparently, the creators sent a brand new MacBook Pro (why not an Air?) to a French fragrance lab, which burrowed away until it found the perfect formulation.
I regret to say that Stink Different is not currently purchaseable, as it was made specially for an art exhibition beginning April 20 in Melbourne.
I feel sure, though, if enough fragrant fanboys were to pester the creators, it would soon be for sale at an Apple store near you. For $120 a bottle — small size.
